Turn back the pages: Gail Anderson’s Michael Jackson scrapbooks

[Gail Anderson] I loved me some MJ in the early 1970s. This was the Michael Jackson of the ABC and I’ll Be There days, way before all the crazy. I loved all the brothers: Michael, Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie — the original Jackson 5. But it was Michael who made my young heart race. You could call it puppy love, but that would be quoting a Donny Osmond song, and any self-respecting Michael fan knows that’s just wrong.

Ann Willoughby: From Aspen to TED, via sketchbook

[Anne Willoughby] One day in June in the early ’70s, at the Aspen Design Conference, I met Milton Glaser for the first time. What I remember most is he carried a small student-grade sketchbook with him everywhere. During presentations in the legendary Aspen white tent, Milton sketched while each speaker took his or her turn on stage (it was mostly “his turn” back then).

Sketchbook: Chris Piascik brings letters to life

From time to time we share the sketchbooks of artists, designers and illustrators who have captured our attention and admiration. These glimpses from the journals of Chris Piascik reveal a lifelong fascination with the alphabet, lettering and what he terms “overlapping lines.” Piascik designs, sketches, teaches, creates apparel and rides his bikes in Cromwell, Conn.

Sketchbook: Karl Heine’s journals build histories & futures

[Karl Heine & kHyal] It was my grandmother who inspired me to create Designer Journals™. She was a consummate adventurer and documented all her experiences. I found this out simply by being a passenger on her travels — not a passenger by any specific means, but as a guest on her adventures in the filtering light of my youth.

In the Feedback Loop: Lunalux

Today we begin a series of interviews with letterpress printers who participated in the Feedback Loop Notebook project. First up is Jenni Undis, proprietress of Lunalux. Just as a notebook is greater than the sum of its pages, the Feedback Loop project is greater than the sum of its partners — all of whom we thank for participating. (All limited edition notebooks are on sale now at Felt & Wire Shop in a special storefront to benefit School: by Design, an initiative by Design Ignites Change.)

Mohawk Show 11 Finalist: No-mo Video

Today’s Mohawk Show Finalist is an exhibition book created by Julian Gosper of Julian Gosper Design. The book is for artist Stan Denniston who documents his experiments with motionless subjects and motionless cameras for his exhibition “No-mo Video.” By training a video camera on a nuclear warning siren, for example, a fearful anticipation is created in the viewer.
