[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

Get a Masters Degree in Stationery from Tradeshow Bootcamp: Meet your instructors[Sami Jensen] Last month, we introduced you to Tradeshow Bootcamp and a few of its alumni. Today, with only two weeks until the Spring Teleconference Series begins, we share some of the brains behind the Bootcamp. Furthermore >Paula Scher shares her geographical visions[Tom Biederbeck] Paula Scher paints maps “to invent my own complicated narrative about the way I see and feel about the world.” The acclaimed Pentagram designer has for the first time collected these paintings and other works in her book Maps. Witty, thought-provoking and obsessively realized, Scher’s artworks hold insights into the relationships between place, truth and visual representation. Here, Scher offers thoughts on her motives in creating maps and why Michael Osborne shares the love on Luxe business cards from Moo[Alyson Kuhn] This Valentine’s Day, Michael Osborne is sharing his love of design (and hearts) with the digital universe. As part of the launch of online printer MOO’s new Luxe business card line, Osborne has designed a deck of variations on the theme of love. For the next four weeks, you can order any or all of Osborne’s designs on the backs of your business cards. Sound good? The plot — and our give-away — gets thicker. Furthermore >The new full-color American Heritage Dictionary: Fully engaging & tactile, too[Alyson Kuhn] The Fifth Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary is my current favorite big book. The staff at publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) refers to the new edition, more than a decade in the making, as AHD5. I plan on calling mine Houghton’s Fifth. (The Third Edition, which has resided on my swiveling dictionary stand for two decades, has just been retired to the reference bookstand in my office.) I recently took a behind-the-scenes tour of the new dictionary with Clif Stoltze, whose studio designed the cover and the letter openers, and Michaela Sullivan, creative director at HMH. Furthermore >Connecticut Modernists invade Palm Springs, discover footwear trend[Lisa & John Gibson] About four years ago, we traveled to Southern California to see the poppies bloom in Antelope Valley, explore Joshua Tree National Park, kick up the dust in Roy Roger’s Pioneertown, take a sound bath at George Van Tassel’s Integratron, and hang out in Jack LaLanne’s old Palm Springs Mid-century Modern Alexander home. We certainly did all that, and much more. What we didn’t plan on was falling in love. (Or becoming blue-footed fashionistas, for that matter.) Furthermore >The inside scoop: Carina Murray’s advice to independent stationery designers[Sami Jensen] If you don’t know the name Carina Murray, you should.
