Ted Bertz: Posterized impressions from the Durham Fair

[Ted Bertz] After recently finishing a personal project, a book commemorating posters completed from 1987 to 2008 for an agricultural fair held each year in Durham, Conn. — Fair Play: Twenty-three years of Durham Fair Posters — Ted Bertz, founder of Bertz Design Group, reflects on the evolution of the graphic design industry over the same period.

Things we love: Living colorfully

[Sami Jensen] It started exactly a year ago today, when we published a story on Things we Love, the colorful, clutch-sized, keepsake filled with “inspirations, intriguing bits, and other curiosities.” We had fun interviewing Deborah Lloyd, president and chief creative officer of kate spade new york, and Ed Miller, Graytor Printing. There was such a high demand for the book that it can now only be seen digitally, here.

Deck the walls with kate spade new york’s holiday artist prints

[Sami Jensen] When kate spade new york declared 2011 to be the year of color, and announced they would release four sets of three vibrant limited edition prints by 12 of their favorite artists, we couldn’t wait to see what each month would bring. Finally, all 12 prints have been released, and we are delighted to bring you the last three: Chocolate for October, Multicolored for November, and Navy for December. And, of course, this new set of prints brings with it another giveaway (details at the end of the post).

Do-it-yourself paper twine gift tags with Paper Crave’s Kristen Magee

[Kristen Magee] If there’s one thing I always find I need more of during the holiday season, it’s gift tags. Well, gift tags and tape. These handmade tags feature tiny, stylized wreaths made using PaperPhine’s fantastic paper twine, and the white ink against the dark gray cardstock makes them look like little chalkboards, don’t you think?

Destinations: Kyle Durrie wants you to love type in her Chevy Van

[Kathleen Adele Fieffe] Kyle Durrie, proprietor of Power & Light Press in Portland, Oregon, is spreading letterpress cheer across North America. Her 1982 Chevy step van is a one-stop letterpress shop and lab, loaded with a 1873 Golding Official No. 3 tabletop platen press and a Showcard sign press. She’s recorded 13,000 miles since she started. A few weeks ago, Kyle made her NYC debut. Her first night she parked in Brooklyn for an evening of letterpress fun at The Arm. I had a pleasure of spending some time with her to find out more about her cross-country adventure.

Penguin’s Great Food books offer four-stars literary fare

[Tom Biederbeck] Literature about food never looked more appealing than it does in Penguin’s new Great Food series. The covers of all 20 books — nine of which are available in the U.S. — are designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. Each cover features a china or ceramic pattern from the period when the book was published, a common kitchen implement … and the publisher’s favorite aquatic, flightless bird, brandishing a knife and fork with miniature Falstaffian gusto.

AIGA’s “What the Book” wants to know what books mean to you

I confess: I silently judge others by their bookshelves and, apparently, so do at least 1153 other book lovers (87% of respondents). Concerned with and intrigued by the changing nature of books, AIGA launched WhattheBook.org to find out just what books mean to people these days.

50 Books/50 Covers exhibition opens in New York

Earlier this year, designers and book lovers saved AIGA’s well-loved 50 Books/50 Covers competition from extinction. 50 Books/50 Covers went on to attract top designs for another year, and the 50 best-designed books and book covers of 2010 are now on display at the AIGA National Design Center in New York. The exhibition runs through Thursday, February 23, 2012. Can’t make it to the exhibit? View the selections online. [SJ]
