Creative Chain: Connecting creatives one link at a time, week four

[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

Green Loop: Learning sustainability from an old chick with a French name

Brian Dougherty, author of Green Graphic Design and principal of Celery Design Collaborative, is known for championing environmental stewardship in his practice. The dress, transformed, at Kate’s Paperie

[Tom Biederbeck] The mannequins in their elegant paper dresses in the windows of Kate’s Paperie stores never shift their eyes, but they’re witness to the confluence of three remarkable creative events: NY Fashion Week, the first annual Paper Ball, and Slash: Paper Under the Knife, a Museum of Arts and Design exhibition sponsored by Kate’s Paperie.

p.s. LOVE stampede

[Alyson Kuhn] There’s a theme I’m thinking of, you can see the theme is love, oo-woo, oo-hoo. Any communiqué will appear vaguely valentinear once it’s adorned with a LOVE stamp. Add an envelope made out of a page whose theme is love, and your medium magnifies the message.

My PC valentine for 2010

[Alyson Kuhn] PC in this case stands for Paper Colors and Paper Culture. My personal valentine message for the new decade is an alphagram, an A–Z  expression of creative encouragement. My inspiration was the name Rose Quartz, a color in Mohawk’s Passport grade, so, with the tiniest alphabetical license, I took care of P-Q-R.

3Qs: Sean Adams has 3 questions (+ 1) for Alexander Isley

[Sean Adams] I’m not easily star-struck. I work with celebrities, and they are like most clients: Most are smart, a few are nitwits. For some reason, however, I end up with a mouthful of marbles when I talk with Alex Isley. I don’t know why he makes me nervous. He’s always disarming, down-to-earth, and couldn’t be friendlier. But I’ve been in awe of his work for a long time. And like most people we admire, he is so much more than just the great work. I’ve learned, over time, to make sure I have a drink before seeing Alex. Then I can relax and not sound really, really foolish.

Bookplates du jour

[Alyson Kuhn] I was recently thinking, as I am wont to do, about small bits of printed paper and the stories they tell. In particular, I was thinking about small-scale personal papers, as differentiated from mass-marketed things like postage stamps, theater stubs and metro tickets.

Bear hugs

As much as we love our blogosphere, we do get frustrated from time to time that we can’t always reach out with a quick hug when we want to give thanks — or support. Thanks to Blackbird Letterpress, we can now send a bear hug — complete with photos, pictures and a handwritten note. This charming card was voted best new product at the 2010 National Stationery Show and is available at Felt & Wire Shop. [LS]

In the Feedback Loop: Rohner Press

We have been so inspired these past few months talking with participants from the Feedback Loop Notebook project. Today we visit with Bruno Rohner and Lindy Sinclair of Rohner Press, and the creative team who helped them create a truly ‘hands-on’ notebook, designer Hans Seeger and illustrator Jason Polan.

Thank you for so much notebook love

When we announced the cool letterpress notebooks that were being sold in support of school design and innovation (also known as the Feedback Loop Project,) we were awed by the outpouring of support. And very, very grateful. Our printers, featured here, were amazing. And so were the many writers, journalists and bloggers who embraced this project and became partners on a mission for good. To all of you we want to say …
