Ted Bertz: Posterized impressions from the Durham Fair

[Ted Bertz] After recently finishing a personal project, a book commemorating posters completed from 1987 to 2008 for an agricultural fair held each year in Durham, Conn. — Fair Play: Twenty-three years of Durham Fair Posters — Ted Bertz, founder of Bertz Design Group, reflects on the evolution of the graphic design industry over the same period.

Presenting Tradeshow Bootcamp: A growing community resource for first-time exhibitors

[Sami Jensen] After exhibiting at her first National Stationery Show in 2009, Katie Hunt, founder, Kelp Designs, was interviewed about her experience. Immediately, Katie began to receive e-mails from prospective exhibitors, asking questions many first-timers ask: How do I know if I’m ready? How many products do I need? How much time and money goes into exhibiting? Thus, Tradeshow Bootcamp was born. And just under one year later, its website, www.tradeshowcamp.com, launches today.

Holidays brought to life at Sephora through the magic of paper

[Tom Biederbeck] All it took was 36,289 paper flowers and snowflakes, countless additional paper elements, three photo shoots for models and props, eight paper artists (including a master artist brought from Italy) and five vendors to produce the holiday displays in more than 300 Sephora stores for the 2011 season. It may be that no retailer has ever used the medium of paper to create a world of beauty on such a scale.

Andrea Peterson gently enlightens us about suminagashi, drop by drop

[Alyson Kuhn] Suminagashi is not the formal word for sushi or for delectable ribbons of rice noodles. It is a centuries-old Japanese technique for printing on water a drop at a time. Sumi means ink, and nagashi refers to moving or floating. Papermaker/book artist Andrea Peterson loves suminagashi. She practices it, prints on top of it, teaches it — and uses “sumi” as a verb.

Everything’s up to date and client-centric at Skylab Letterpress

[Alyson Kuhn] When I was in Kansas City last August, two terrific (and totally different) letterpress shops were high on my agenda: Skylab and Hammerpress. Hammerpress is in an arty neighborhood and easy to find, but Skylab is in a more industrial part of town, across the river. When we were finished with our tour of Hammerpress, Bob Atkins of Skylab offered to drive over and fetch us. How hospitable is that?!

Lululemon strikes a pose on paper with lots of ‘Great Excuses Not to Go to Yoga’

[Alyson Kuhn] I was chatting with Bob Atkins of Skylab Letterpress before the holidays, and asked him whether he’d printed any unusual year-end cards or calendars. He faux-casually commented that he had in fact printed 215,000 cards — in three colors — for Lululemon, the nimble yoga outfitters. My antennae levitated lightly! After a few deep breaths, I called designer Stephanie Chan at Lululemon in Vancouver, B.C.

That burning question

What, exactly, is the future of printed literature? Our friend Brian Singer (Altitude) has created a video commemorating Ray Bradbury’s dystopian touchstone, Fahrenheit 451, which is set to be released as an e-book. Singer explains, “Seemed ironic that a book about book burning would then move to a platform negating the need for a printed book.” Watch the video after the jump.

If Etsy were Pinterest …

Netherlands web developer Jonathan Bouman has a thing for scrolling websites. Warning: You might want to bookmark it and go back to it later, or you’ll wonder where your entire day has gone. [SJ]
