Ted Bertz: Posterized impressions from the Durham Fair

[Ted Bertz] After recently finishing a personal project, a book commemorating posters completed from 1987 to 2008 for an agricultural fair held each year in Durham, Conn. — Fair Play: Twenty-three years of Durham Fair Posters — Ted Bertz, founder of Bertz Design Group, reflects on the evolution of the graphic design industry over the same period.

Mary Austin: Bookcentric patron of the arts

[Alyson Kuhn] Mary Austin’s enthusiasm for books literally knows no bounds. Encountering her remarkable collection of artists books — now hovering above 2000 pieces — is like sliding down the wonderlandish rabbit hole. Austin readily acknowledges, “I buy to support living artists. And I have only one criterion: I buy what I like.” A well-curated fraction of Austin’s favorites were recently presented in an exhibition whose subtitle, Theatre of the Book, set the stage perfectly.

Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave

[Laura Tarrish] Imagine: filmy lens paper painted to look like lace, so expertly rendered that you have to take a second and third look to be sure it was not made from the finest cotton threads … paper convincingly painted to mimic linen, silk, embroidery, damask … buttons, jewelry, feathers, edgings, ribbons, even “straw” hats … all made from exquisitely manipulated paper.

Isaac Salazar’s book origami turns old novels into new art

[Sami Jensen] As the digitization of books and the usage of e-readers grows increasingly popular, the number of books going into landfills is also going up. But, Isaac Salazar — the book lovin’, Planet Green watchin’ accountant extraordinaire — has a creative solution: 3D book art.

Art Chantry: Designer, artist … collector

[Emily Potts] Art Chantry is one of 40 artists featured in Rockport’s new book, LUST, a traveling art journal of graphic designers by James Victore. This “sketchbook” traveled the world, passing from one designer to the next, all of whom contributed ideas for dream projects and passions in life. When the book landed in Chantry’s lap in Seattle, he recorded his lust to acquire and live in the Space Needle. Here he talks about the things he collects and lusts for, and how they inspire him.

Egg2Cake: Making memories with paper

[Alyson Kuhn] Egg2Cake isn’t about baking — though business partners Jamie Diersing (above right) and Kate Rivinus Blackman (left) previously worked together at a company named Baker, which happens to be a corporate brand consultancy and integrated design firm. But I’m getting ahead of myself. I knew nothing at all about Egg2Cake when one of their greeting cards (see below) made me laugh in disbelief. A quick click later, the headline — “playful paper goods for making merry memories” — moved me to call them for a kuhnversation.

Wherefore the book?

[Michael Carabetta] That was my first thought* for the title of the lecture I was invited to deliver at Brown University’s John Carter Brown Library. Under the aegis of the Watts Program for the History and Culture of the Book, Lisa Long Feldman, the program manager, developed a series of lectures and hands-on workshops — Transformations of the Book — with a cast of professors and practitioners from the Brown/RISD community and elsewhere (I’m from elsewhere) that examined, prognosticated, and celebrated the book as we know it … and as it might become.

The past, present & future of books

Yesterday’s announcement of Borders closing means different things to different people. To those of us who covet physical books, the closing of the nation’s second largest bookstore chain is utterly upsetting. It makes us consider the present and future of books and publishing, and the booming past that is slipping away much too quickly for our tastes.

TEDsters: Let’s see your sketches!

As we watched some of our favorite TEDTalks, hearing Maira Kalman discuss sketching reminded us of Ann Willoughby’s time-lapse video of sketches from various TED events she’s attended (see example above, at right, after the jump). We also know that the TEDGlobal program book has space for thoughts and drawings. We’d love to see what you’ve journaled.
