Ted Bertz: Posterized impressions from the Durham Fair

[Ted Bertz] After recently finishing a personal project, a book commemorating posters completed from 1987 to 2008 for an agricultural fair held each year in Durham, Conn. — Fair Play: Twenty-three years of Durham Fair Posters — Ted Bertz, founder of Bertz Design Group, reflects on the evolution of the graphic design industry over the same period.

Chandra Greer takes a stand on social civility

[Alyson Kuhn] Chandra Greer has a sharp eye. Her shop — simply named Greer — in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood sports a stellar selection of cards, most of which are available on Greer’s website. Her motto since opening her shop 11 years ago — or maybe it’s become her mantra — is “Civility is not a sign of weakness.”

‘Getting Upper’ — at the intersection of language, letterforms & graffiti

[Amos Klausner] The philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel wrote that, “To learn to read and write an alphabetic writing should be regarded as a means to infinite culture,” while the post-structuralist French philosopher Michel Foucault wrote that, “Language is oppression,” because it is developed to allow only those people who speak it not to be oppressed. These two contradictory ideas, one based on the premise that through letters, the world opens itself up to us, and the other, which considers how letters and language can shut the door, are the basis for an experimental typographic project called Getting Upper, on exhibit at Pasadena Museum of California Art May 15–Sept. 4.

Kelly McMahon writes an order for Cursive

[Alyson Kuhn] Kelly McMahon is the designer-printer-binder of May Day Studio’s self-described “quirky paper goods.” She holds a graduate degree in Creative Writing from California College of the Arts in San Francisco and observes, “What I’m really good at is sitting still and thinking a lot.” She is also really good at making books. At the National Stationery Show in 2010, McMahon swooned when her albums and brag books were selected by Cursive, the mostly-stationery boutique at ABC Carpet & Home in New York City.

10 reasons why design project schedules fail

Planning is the intellectual, psychological and tactical process of thinking about each task that needs to be accomplished to meet a goal. In design, a formal planning and scheduling process improves logistics, avoids wasted time, and helps the team stay on track. Establishing and implementing a workable project schedule is often easier said than done. Terry Lee Stone’s two-book series, Managing The Design Process — Concept Development and Implementing Design — helps designers manage the collaborative workflow that brings about the best possible outcome for themselves and their clients. One issue the books address is why seemingly simple things like schedules often fail.

How Maia de Raat hit the jackalope jackpot

[Alyson Kuhn] Maia de Raat is the owner-artist-printer of Dandy Lion Press, which she founded in 2007. In May 2010, she exhibited at the National Stationery Show for the first time, as one of nine printers sharing the Ladies of Letterpress’ big, bustling booth. De Raat was in fact minding the booth (and resting her feet), when Jennifer Rome of Anthropologie arrived to make her day.

Abi Huynh’s Arietta: A “serious” typeface

Arietta is Abi Huynh’s “first serious text face,” says the artist, but this robust, highly readable serif looks more like the mature work of a master typographer. A principal and cofounder of the Vancouver, B.C., studio Working Format, Huynh created Arietta as a thesis project in 2009 for the Type and Media master’s degree program at The Royal Academy of Art in the Netherlands.

Snail mail your e-mail

Have your e-mails turned into handwritten letters, and sent for free! Snail Mail My Email was created by Ivan Cash, a San Francisco-based art director and avid-letter-writer-turned-e-mailer. ”We move in such a fast-paced world that, sometimes, that world can feel kind of cold and impersonal,” Cash told CNN. He started Snail Mail My Email to encourage people to slow down and take the time to put pen to paper.

A Thousand Thank Yous

Husband and wife team Nathan and Monika Rose of Parallel Print Shop have just moved their press room from a small one-car garage into a real studio, and they want to pay it forward by sending out 1000 thank you cards. The one thing holding them back is their lack of funds to purchase a Heidelberg Windmill Press, which would allow them to print their thank you cards (and other stationery) more rapidly.

Bone folders … for a good fold & a good cause

A bone folder is possibly the most essential tool for a paper or book artist or any paperlover who wants to get a crisp fold or score. One of my favorite sets is now available in Felt & Wire Shop in the new Supply section, reported here last week. All proceeds from this sale benefit the nonprofit WNY Book Arts Center. Happiness. It was so sweet

We had a fantastic time at the Ladies of Letterpress conference, Art & Industry, this past weekend. It was great getting to meet and talk to so many lovers of paper and print. To continue our celebration of this great event, we are featuring a collection from co-founder Jessica White filled with Ladies’ member’s products inspired by the hot, sweltering summer weather. According to her, when the weather gets too hot, “some days I just want to lean back in my grandma’s old lawn chair and soak in the rays.” [AV]
