[Ted Bertz] After recently finishing a personal project, a book commemorating posters completed from 1987 to 2008 for an agricultural fair held each year in Durham, Conn. — Fair Play: Twenty-three years of Durham Fair Posters — Ted Bertz, founder of Bertz Design Group, reflects on the evolution of the graphic design industry over the same period.

kate spade new york’s year of color takes us into summer[Sami Jensen] Two months ago, we were giddy to introduce kate spade new york’s colorful Artist Portfolio Prints — three in a set, four sets, one for each season. We were dazzled by the vivid January red, lovely February pink and energizing March yellow. The latest set introduces green, orange and gold as the colors of summer. Think grass tickling your toes, juicy oranges and warm, golden sunshine. Furthermore >Louise Fili & Steven Heller trace the history of typographic scripts[Tom Biederbeck] The designer Louise Fili and her husband Steven Heller are a publishing enterprise on their own. Among the books they’ve published (trust us; there are many) are a classic series of volumes on the history of graphic design. Their latest, Scripts: Elegant Lettering From Design’s Golden Age, is an indispensable guide to those letterforms that evoke handwriting — fluid strokes that seem to have captured contemporary imaginations starved for expression and typographic warmth. We asked Fili for a quick tour of her latest tour de force. Furthermore >Levi’s “Shape What’s to Come” community: Movers, shapers & quotable women[Alyson Kuhn] I recently had the pleasure of holding in my hands a Shape What’s to Come journal, whose covers feel exactly like a pair of jeans worn and washed to perfection. Inside: mostly blank pages and an occasional inspiring quote. What is this jaunty little journal for? I had the good fortune to speak with Michael Perman, senior director for Global Marketing at Levi’s, and hear the story, which involves Levi’s sponsorship of the first TEDWomen conference back in December 2010. Furthermore >Destination: Copenhagen for type nerds & novices[Sami Jensen] Why fly to a tropical island resort this summer when you can express your inner (or maybe outer) typography nerd in Denmark? Danish design firm e-Types has launched Playtype, a pop-up typography store in Copenhagen that seeks to share typographic knowledge and geekery with newbies and typophiles alike. Go soon, though, it’s only open until December 1st, 2011! Furthermore >Business Card Collection 5.0: Cardboard, not just for boxes[Nancy Wu] Cardboard is probably the last thing one would think of to print business cards on. It’s brown, it’s bumpy, it can have an inconsistent finish, it’s really cheap, it’s dead simple to find, and … wait. Perhaps those are precisely the reasons why designers choose something other than a no-name white stock. These days, cardboard — or its thinner version, kraft paper — is often used for shopping bags, shoe boxes, book covers, furniture and packaging design (this includes self-shippers, wrappers or various structures to hold food, discs, computer software, and gift products). Did I also mention it’s recycled and recyclable? It’s great for the environment, but most of all, it can look great when in the trusted hands of a meticulous designer and an experienced printer. Furthermore >Paces Papers: Bellwether of Southern stationery style[Alyson Kuhn] In 1974, Jackie Howard started a stationery business in her home in Atlanta, armed with a degree in graphic design and a love of paper. Her venture flourished, and in 1984, Paces Papers by Jackie opened on East Paces Ferry Road. I recently checked in with Jackie to see how the shop is keeping pace with changing times. Furthermore > |

We are big fans of any gift that comes in a paper form. That’s why we were so excited to see the collection guest curator Megan Patrick, of HOW Magazine, put together. Both she and her husband are creative in their gift giving and desires, so her collection is chock full products that are designed to inspire. Visit her collection to see what she would get her husband who “loves coffee in a stereotypical designer way,” and what she might want to see in gift wrap sometime soon. [AV]

Literally, in some cases! We’re intrigued and inspired by all of the hands-on projects from designer Shasta Garcia’s new tumblr, shastablasta wraps presents well — and she does! But we’re especially fond of the luau wedding menus she made for her friends using Mohawk Skytone … although, to be honest, we’re a little concerned that she may be a fire hazard. Furthermore >
