Creative Chain: Connecting creatives one link at a time, week four

[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

John Hanford: Traveling with the tools of my trade

[John Hanford] I am an artist who enjoys carpentry, woodworking, photography and jewelry-making. Being a gadget lover, I also like steampunk and the retronaut movement. I recently found an outlet for my retro sensibilities by creating a new tool cabinet for myself from an old hard-sided sewing machine case.

Kiva Stimac: Club owner, poster printer, vegetarian chef, wood type enthusiast

[Alyson Kuhn] Last week, in our feature on Virgin Wood Type (VWT), we mentioned Kiva Stimac. She and her husband, bassist Mauro Pezzente, run a pair of performance spaces in Montréal. Stimac designs and prints posters — and business cards, menus, handbills and “the other ephemera that goes with owning a business” — in her studio/printshop on the second floor of Casa del Popolo, right above the venue.

Business Card Collection 6.0: More than details — engraving, foil & labels

[Nancy Wu] Your client says plain 2D printing won’t cut it. He wants something special — something tactile, out of the ordinary — and money is no object. Then you wake up from your dream and come back to reality. Thankfully, there are print techniques for that special quality and irresistible (to the touch) detail that digital may never emulate. There is the affordable option of foil stamping, and the more expensive — yet distinctive — option of engraving. Or if money is an object, and you like to work with your hands, how about adding a stamp or a label to a business card to give a sense of handicraft or a functional purpose?

Water is my partner: On making paper

[Michelle Wilson] Paper is typically conceived of as a substrate — a surface for writing or printing, a flat container for visual information. As a hand papermaker, however, I contend that even before the paper is used, it is a record of history and interconnection, eloquently expressed by Zen master, author and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh in the poem “Peace Is Every Step.”

Gallivanting with glue stick & glassine: Laura Tarrish’s travel journals

[Laura Tarrish] Traveling seems to be the only time I keep a journal. The mere fact that I am spending my day in an unfamiliar — or less familiar — locale heightens my senses. I am more keenly aware of the details of daily life … of signage, packaging and exotic products, colors and textures, building materials and landscapes.

Virgin Wood Type: A man, a plan, a pantograph

[Alyson Kuhn] I traded business cards with Bill Jones of Virgin Wood Type in an elevator, within minutes of arriving at the Ladies of Letterpress conference in Asheville back in August. Later, he was both anecdotal and perfectly linear about answering my umpteen questions. The pantograph (below) on which Jones makes new wood type for letterpress printers is 5 ft. long. As far as Jones knows, his machine is one of a kind. It’s certainly kind of amazing.

Leatrice Eiseman’s on a color mission

When Pantone selected the Color of the Year, they didn’t think of it as “the hot fashion color, but an expression of a mood, an attitude, on the part of the consumers.” So said Leatrice Eiseman today in the New York Times. Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute is the co-author of PANTONE: The 20th Century in Color. See Felt & Wire’s interview with her here. Take a look at Felt & Wire Shop’s curated collection in honor of Pantone’s Color of the Year. [MD]

A must-watch for lovers of ‘ink&paper’

We know that running a small paper company or letterpress print shop these days seems largely a labor of love and passion. This sentiment is explored in the beautiful short (10 min.) film, ink&paper, which shares a story of a Los Angeles letterpress printer and paper company.
