Creative Chain: Connecting creatives one link at a time, week four

[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

Sitting pretty with PLANEfurniture

[Alyson Kuhn] Michael Boyd, designer of the PLANEfurniture line, collects modernist furniture, art, architecture and design books, and ephemera. Last year, he decided to create a line of modernist-inspired furniture that “makes you think, holds your body, eases your mind, and sits well within your budget.” That’s a quote from the jacket flap of PLANEfurniture: types + prototypes, designed by Mick Hodgson of Ph.D, A Design Office. Lost lists, found lists & John Lennon’s to-do list

What do lists say about their writers? And what is the value of these lists? To answer the former question, design lecturer Jessica Helfand asked her students to create visual biographies from found shopping lists. And speaking of the latter, a to-do list written by John Lennon just sold for $16,696.00 on Gottahaverockandroll.com.

It’s interesting that, in this age of time-management apps and iCal alarms, we still make handwritten lists to remind us to do things like fix a bathroom hook, make sure the cars have gas, and buy certain groceries. And, of course, many of us make holiday wish lists.

Why do you create lists? Do you still scribble yours with a pen, or do you type it out on your smart phone? Have you ever found an abandoned list and imagined what the writer’s life was like?
