Things we love: Living colorfully

[Sami Jensen] It started exactly a year ago today, when we published a story on Things we Love, the colorful, clutch-sized, keepsake filled with “inspirations, intriguing bits, and other curiosities.” We had fun interviewing Deborah Lloyd, president and chief creative officer of kate spade new york, and Ed Miller, Graytor Printing. There was such a high demand for the book that it can now only be seen digitally, here.

Only a few months after the release of Things we Love, we learned that kate spade new york had declared 2011 “the year of color,” and commissioned 12 of their favorite artists to paint, photograph, design, stitch, print, and create collages based on their assigned color of the month. The creative team at kate spade new york took each piece of artwork and created limited edition Artist Portfolio Prints, also on super-thick Mohawk Superfine, lovingly blind-debossed, as you can see below.

We’re grateful we had the chance to share the inside scoop on each gorgeous print — and the artist behind it — before it was seen anywhere else (except maybe on the kate spade new york blog behind the curtain). We gave away limited-edition sets of three each time a new trio of prints was released in springsummerfall and for the holidays.

All 12 Artist Portfolio Prints, in order by month, were printed on Mohawk Superfine.

Imagining the Artist Portfolio Prints on our walls sparked us to write a small piece about a few amazing salon-style walls. (We’re grateful to photographer Todd Selby, who gave us permission to use the photo below that he took of a salon-style wall in Andy and Kate Spade’s home.)

It’s always a fun experience to work with a company that shares the same passion for paper, color, design, typography … and especially, thoughtful punctuation. kate spade new york’s cheeky Air Quote Mittens warm our hearts just as much as they warm our hands.

Here’s to 2011, the year of color and collaboration, and to 2012: We can’t wait to see what next year brings.
