A feast for your eyes at Art of the Menu

Just as most of us are more likely to leave a bad review for a restaurant we hate than a good review for one we love, Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Armin Vit of UnderConsideration admit that designers and typophiles make a game out of laughing at menus that use Comic Sans or Papyrus, yet are less likely to appreciate a well-designed menu. With Art of the Menu, their first new blog in two years, they’re going to change that.

PANTONE: The 20th Century in Color — from the publisher’s perspective

[Alyson Kuhn] Last week, we spoke with Leatrice Eiseman and Keith Recker, the authors of PANTONE: The 20th Century in Color. This is a Reprinting Office!

Last Friday, we took our readers on a scenic tour of Pat Reagh’s remodeled bathroom, resplendent with his “This is a Shower Stall” tile. Check out yesterday morning’s lively après-article by Reagh’s friend Jennifer Kennard on her Letterology blog. She gives a great mini-history of Beatrice Warde’s “This is a Printing Office” manifesto. The very attentive reader will note Kennard’s “user handle”… and laugh at the thematic serendipity. Key benefit: Letterology’s frequent posts about typewriters and the art they inspire — both on paper and on stage! [AK]

Luck à l’orange: My plastic, fantastic correspondence kit

[Alyson Kuhn] The slightly squishy plastic box you see here was delivered to my doorstep in the Indian summer of 2002. It came in a little corrugated box, and it contained a simple invitation card to the grand opening of the Container Store in San Francisco. I promptly adapted it, as shown above. Here’s the perfect thing: It is thanks to my long loyalty to mini-staples — reserves of which can always be found in my custom kit — that I received the invitation.
