Creative Chain: Connecting creatives one link at a time, week four

[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

Mohawk Show 12: Submit to Your Love Affair With Paper

[Kim Rogala] As the Mohawk Show 12 entry deadline approaches (May 31st, so hurry and enter!) we wanted to direct your attention to the Show’s materials that were created by the team at Tether. Sitting pretty with PLANEfurniture

[Alyson Kuhn] Michael Boyd, designer of the PLANEfurniture line, collects modernist furniture, art, architecture and design books, and ephemera. Last year, he decided to create a line of modernist-inspired furniture that “makes you think, holds your body, eases your mind, and sits well within your budget.” That’s a quote from the jacket flap of PLANEfurniture: types + prototypes, designed by Mick Hodgson of Ph.D, A Design Office. I recently sat in some of the furniture and can confirm that it is quite user-friendly.

Design* Sponge makes headlines

As if this summer’s release of Design*Sponge at Home wasn’t enough, design blogger extraordinaire Grace Bonny has hit us with big news yet again. This week Design*Sponge launched its first ever newspaper. Bonny says she and her team enjoyed their move from computer screen to printing press. “We’re used to being trapped in a narrow, vertical column, so we loved getting to work with larger images and play around with text placement.”

How does a blog manage to get a newspaper into the hands of its readers? “That was our biggest challenge. We mailed out 10,000 copies to street teams in 27 cities who placed the newspapers in over 200 locations. I’d love for everyone who wants one to be able to have one, so I’m hoping this process is something we can improve upon for next time,” she says.

So, will there be a next time? Bonny says she hopes so, because “the best part of producing a printed piece is getting to interview people in person, and receiving photos of readers with the newspaper in their hands.” [KR]
