Creative Chain: Connecting creatives one link at a time, week four

[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

Mohawk Show 12: Submit to Your Love Affair With Paper

[Kim Rogala] As the Mohawk Show 12 entry deadline approaches (May 31st, so hurry and enter!) we wanted to direct your attention to the Show’s materials that were created by the team at Tether. We asked Stanley Hainsworth, founder and chief creative officer of Tether, to tell us a little about his thoughts behind the designs.

Sitting pretty with PLANEfurniture

[Alyson Kuhn] Michael Boyd, designer of the PLANEfurniture line, collects modernist furniture, art, architecture and design books, and ephemera. Last year, he decided to create a line of modernist-inspired furniture that “makes you think, holds your body, eases your mind, and sits well within your budget.” That’s a quote from the jacket flap of PLANEfurniture: types + prototypes, designed by Mick Hodgson of Ph.D, A Design Office. I recently sat in some of the furniture and can confirm that it is quite user-friendly.

You’ve got birthday mail!

Last weekend, Allyson Van Houten, the curator of Felt & Wire Shop, joined me (Alyson with-one-l Kuhn) at the Ladies of Letterpress conference. Today, August 11, is her birthday. She will receive a card mailed from Asheville, bearing the signatures of several new pals.

Allyson VH is a great appreciator of letterpress — and a splendid dining companion, willing to share a multitude of menu items. At Mohawk, she specializes in interactive marketing, so she is a very social-media savvy gal. She Facebooks, she tweets, she is smarter than her smart phone. But Allyson also loves paper, and we think she will get a great kick out of this card, signed by people who live in six different cities and who had never all been in the same place at the same time … until the Ladies of Letterpress brought them together. Happy Snail Mail to you, Happy Snail Mail to you, Happy Snail Mail, dear Ally, Happy Snail Mail to you!

The card came from Loft in downtown Asheville. It’s part of the Birthday of the Month line produced by Pen & Inc., which I hadn’t seen before. There was not a ghost of a chance that I could resist buying October’s card as well. What a treat! [AK]
