[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

[Alyson Kuhn] Michael Boyd, designer of the PLANEfurniture line, collects modernist furniture, art, architecture and design books, and ephemera. Last year, he decided to create a line of modernist-inspired furniture that “makes you think, holds your body, eases your mind, and sits well within your budget.” That’s a quote from the jacket flap of PLANEfurniture: types + prototypes, designed by Mick Hodgson of Ph.D, A Design Office. I recently sat in some of the furniture and can confirm that it is quite user-friendly. Furthermore >

Floral patterns in an age of cultural exchange In the late 19th century, the discovery by European artists of the long Japanese tradition of woodblock prints — including the famed ukiyo-e, “pictures of the floating world” — sparked the Art Nouveau movement. Le Japon Artistique: Japanese Floral Pattern Design in the Art Nouveau Era is a new release from Chronicle Books that handsomely depicts this fascinating episode in cultural cross-pollination.
A fine introductory essay by Rachel Saunders (of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) provides background and context for the exchange of floral pattern artistry that played such an important role in both Japanese and Western movements. This book will be valued by anyone with an interest in Japanese woodblock art, floral patterns and the history of art. And its design makes it a fine gift for discerning collectors of art books. [TB]
