Creative Chain: Connecting creatives one link at a time, week four

[Emily Potts] Last week we were inspired by three amazing artists: Henning Wagenbreth, Sophie Dutertre and Placid. In keeping with the French artist theme, I’m starting off this week’s Creative Chain with an illustrator I deeply admire and respect.

Sitting pretty with PLANEfurniture

[Alyson Kuhn] Michael Boyd, designer of the PLANEfurniture line, collects modernist furniture, art, architecture and design books, and ephemera. Last year, he decided to create a line of modernist-inspired furniture that “makes you think, holds your body, eases your mind, and sits well within your budget.” That’s a quote from the jacket flap of PLANEfurniture: types + prototypes, designed by Mick Hodgson of Ph.D, A Design Office. I recently sat in some of the furniture and can confirm that it is quite user-friendly.

See posters from the Chicago Biennial: Opening July 14

If you’re in Chicago July 14–28, take the opportunity to experience 170 posters from the 2nd Chicago International Poster Biennial. Thursday, July 14, a special free opening night event at Harrington College of Design invites all to share a glass of wine and view winners from the exhibition, handmade posters and selections from the associated student poster competition. Read on for details.

Jointly sponsored by the Chicago International Poster Biennial Association (CIPBA) and Harrington College of Design, the July 14 opening from 6–9 p.m. is free to the public; location is 200 W. Madison Street in downtown Chicago. This collection of some of the world’s finest contemporary posters was selected by a lauded international jury led by Paula Scher of Pentagram, who designed the 2nd Biennial poster (which we wrote about here).

At the opening, exhibition catalogs and Scher’s poster will be on sale. In addition, donors making a contribution to the Biennial at the event will receive a selected, framed poster from the CIPBA archives. An array of global poster art on this scale is seldom seen in the United States — for poster designers and enthusiasts, this is an exhibition not to be missed. And if you can’t be there opening night, the posters will remain at Harrington College through July 28.

More events associated with the 2nd Chicago Biennial are scheduled for the rest of the month. Keep up with the news here. [TB]
