So, I began browsing through the Felt & Wire shop for a more unique selection. For me, these one-word, nature-inspired postcards from gilah press + design would more accurately convey the awesome (or rad, or badass, or gnarly) beauty of the Grand Canyon.
Don’t get me wrong, I think cheesy postcards like the one above are great. If I was visiting Ireland, I couldn’t think of anything more perfect to send to my good-humored dad than a train of cows. But for my mom, sisters and friends, I’d want something a bit more inspired and whimsical, like the Live Each Season Set of 5 Postcards by Lunalux (below), which capture my wanderlust and Thoreauvian appreciation for natural beauty.
Speaking of whimsical, I’m also partial to the hand-painted natural chipboard postcards below by One Fine Dae, perfect for any summer vacation whether you’re sailing, driving, or flying (especially handy since postage is included). I could see these postcards being repurposed as wall art for a child’s bedroom, too.
Maybe you’re like me and you get a little creeped out thinking about who’s read your message by the time it reaches your intended recipient. Most people my age have no issues with privacy. Me? I’m sometimes horrified by what Facebook “friends” post online. I prefer not to share my innermost thoughts with everyone along the postal chain (or on the worldwide web), so I might take a stack of notecards with me to send instead of postcards. Pie Bird Press has some really great vibrant and outdoorsy blank-inside notecards for just that purpose. I’m a fan of the Lawn Chairs card, reminiscent of lazy summer days:
… and the Kerosene Lantern card, also from Pie Bird Press:
Whether your summer vacation takes you on a road trip to explore the natural wonders of America the Beautiful, on a far-t00-long remote camping trip with your entire family and none of your friends, or around the globe, for that matter, bring a few postcards and notecards with you, so you’re not stuck with the four-color glossies (unless, of course, that’s exactly what you want). Let the adventuring begin!
Plan ahead: When you’re bringing postcards or notecards with you on vacation, we recommend keeping them in a re-sealable plastic bag with a cardboard insert to keep them from bending or getting dirty. Don’t forget to throw in a few carefully selected postcard stamps (29¢) and first-class mail stamps (44¢), so you can enjoy every minute of your adventure without having to worry about where to find stamps and postcards.
