The Paper Runway

[Allyson Van Houten] Imagine this: Eager, young fashion designers are sitting in class waiting for their next project. The professor walks in, starts explaining the work that will need to be done, and instantly the students have visions of the pieces they will create. But  the professor is still explaining the biggest part of the challenge: The final pieces must be made out of paper.

The National Stationery Show, in partnership with Kate’s Paperie, offered this challenge to a group of cutting-edge fashion designers including Lela Rose, Susan Woo, Yeohlee, Jen Kao, Donald Deal and design students at New York City’s LIM College. All submissions were on display at the Stationery Show as part of “The Paper Runway.”

For paper lovers everywhere, this was truly a sight to see. Over 11,000 attendees and exhibitors had the chance to view this stunning collaboration of paper and fashion. Each dress displayed an appreciation for paper as a medium for creativity, craftsmanship and fashion sense.

The winning students, Alexis Michaelides and Margaret Carroll, each received a $1000 cash prize and the opportunity to have their dresses in a window display at Kate’s Paperie during New York Fashion Week.
