Photographer John Madere collaborated with designer Lynda Decker on the project. It took him about a year to synchronize schedules with all of his subjects: April Greiman, Chip Kidd, Ellen Lupton, Lella and Massimo Vignelli, Michael Bierut, Milton Glaser, Paula Scher, Seymour Chwast, Stefan Sagmeister and Stephen Doyle. At the back of the book, Madere tells about selecting each setting.
Fittingly, John Madere: Portraits of Design is printed on Mohawk Kromekote, a paper whose performance has delighted decades of designers, printers, and their clients. Madere’s personal studies are intimate, radiant and rich. Black clothes, black walls, walls of books, covers of books, small objets, vast panes of glass, reflections, inflections — Kromekote sees it all.
Would you like to receive your very own copy of John Madere: Portraits of Design? At MohawkPaperStore.com, your click is our command. Later this week, I’ll interview Madere about this project. My post will include a couple (hint) of Madere’s portraits, plus photos of the photographer in action. Next week, Lynda Decker — definitely a devotée of uncoated paper — will report on rediscovering the charisma of Kromekote. Read, baby, read.
