Rachel Hazell, The Travelling Bookbinder, crosses the Pond

[Alyson Kuhn] Rachel Hazell is a book artist and have-punch-will-travel teacher of book arts. London-born Hazell, who currently lives in Edinburgh, has grand plans for 2012. She is scheduling a bookbinding workshop in a different part of the world each month. January’s was in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire; March’s will be on the Summer Isles in Northwest Scotland. And February’s — aptly titled Colour of Love — begins today in the Napa Valley. I’ll be right there — writing about paper engineering, stitching and all things Valentinear.

Here’s my home library story

[Ann Koller Flower] Yes, I support my local public library. In fact I am a librarian at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. But I love having my own library. I love the decadence of buying a new book by one of my favorite authors when it comes out. Which means I have lots and lots of books.

When I asked my husband Vinz to help me solve the problem of where to put all of the books that were overflowing from my very inadequate shelving, he started thinking about a solution.

And a few months later, he and a friend were busily installing new floor-to-ceiling shelves in our guest room. We already had overhead storage closets there, with a beautiful wooden ladder for access. Vinz’s design idea incorporated that ladder as well as leftover metal pipe from another friend’s home plumbing project. End result: towering shelves with easy access via ladder hooked to strategically placed pipe rail. And very happy books, arranged by author {or editor} lining the guest room.

Vinz would like to say a few words about this project. “The solution was really pretty simple: fill every square inch of wall space with shelves. I figured we would have space for ten years of new books. After five, Ann started running out of space. Next phase will be surrounding windows with shelves.”

Ann Flower grew up in San Francisco next door to Alyson Kuhn’s family. Alyson and her sister recently visited Ann and Vinz in Carmel. Ann, being both bookish and tech-ish, helped Alyson join Shelfari.
