On the wire: Chandra Greer visits one-of-a-kind Campbell Raw Press

[Chandra Greer] Campbell Raw Press is a design studio run by Maggie Campbell and her husband Matt Raw out of their Brooklyn home. Maggie creates beautiful hand-bound books as well as letterpress cards and invitations. She’s the mother of a darling little girl who inspires her every day. And she inspires us with her meticulous talent, positive energy and ability to juggle a million things while always keeping her family at the top of the list.

Rachel Hazell, The Travelling Bookbinder, crosses the Pond

[Alyson Kuhn] Rachel Hazell is a book artist and have-punch-will-travel teacher of book arts. London-born Hazell, who currently lives in Edinburgh, has grand plans for 2012. She is scheduling a bookbinding workshop in a different part of the world each month. January’s was in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire; March’s will be on the Summer Isles in Northwest Scotland. And February’s — aptly titled Colour of Love — begins today in the Napa Valley. I’ll be right there — writing about paper engineering, stitching and all things Valentinear.

Hands-on Studio at AIGA Make/Think

[Laura Shore] One of the surprising successes at the 2007 AIGA design conference in Denver was the Sketch Wall. At next month’s Make/Think conference in Memphis, the Sketch Wall will be folded into a Hands-on Studio for rejuvenating creativity – over all four days.

The Hands-on Studio will provide a casual salon for simply drawing, sketching and making things, as well as offer scheduled studio time with distinguished instructors and specific projects. Tools and materials will be provided. Some lucky attendees will have the rare opportunity to print with Jim Sherraden, manager, chief designer and archivist at Hatch Show Print. Since 1984, Jim has overseen Hatch’s transition from cultural survivor to widely recognized graphic design icon and destination for letterpress enthusiasts. Print on supplied paper or bring your own t-shirt!

The exquisite corpse drawing workshop promises to be another highlight, led by Ronald J. Cala, art director of CMYK. In this session, groups of four will each create “exquisite corpse” drawings. On a folded sheet of paper, participants will draw whatever they wish and pass it to the next person, who will then continue the drawing without knowing what has come before it.
Find yourself somewhere between a Rorschach test and Dada, as you watch Stefan G. Bucher create monsters from an ink blot and compressed air – then create your own! Once your monster comes to life, a storytelling improv exercise will give everybody a laugh.

We hope you’ll attend Make/Think and join the fun. Felt & Wire will be blogging live and featuring highlights from the Hands-on Studio workshops!
